Coffee Thief Colorimtery
Materials:
Cell phone w/camera, clear plastic cup, flash light,
a foam cup to enjoy some coffee (bring sugar & creamer if you like)
(provided) computer with PAINT program, coffee, coffee maker
| Day 1 Objective: Term: colorimeter Whether you are making coffee, tea, lemon aid or Koolaid, it's common sense that the percentage of water affects the strength of the beverage. As a coffee drinker I get a bit irritated when someone "steals from the pot" in the early stages of brewing. Looking at the glorious stream of liquid I have noticed that the strongest (darkest) concentration of java nectar is at the very beginning of the brewing cycle and it lightens up considerably the last half of the cycle. If the pot is left undisturbed it all mixes together to make the desired final concentration. As a person of science I would like to argue to the coffee thieves with actual data to support my complaint. This is where you come in! Your mission is to gather actual data using the science of COLORIMETRY. Research and plan the layout and procedure of your makeshift coffee colorimeter in your JOURNAL with detailed diagrams and concerns ![]() * Practice taking a picture with your cell camera and emailing it to yourself * Plan the design of your colorimeter and procedure in your JOURNAL * How will you analyze the digital pictures? * What elements need to be kept constant & why? * Learn about light colors and filters * Open up images in a paint program and make note of important RGB values e.g. Red, Green, Blue, White, Brown, Light brown * How will you calibrate the system? (water, full strength) * Discuss concerns classwide * Show teacher your JOURNAL before the end of class |
| Day 2 There will be 4 pots available to collect digital pictures of; water, 2 cups (1 mug) stolen at start, 4 cups (2 mugs) stolen at start, and full strength. * Analyze the average RGB values for each of the images * In your JOURNAL record/chart these transmitted intensities and draw conclusions |
