FIRE Power!
Materials :
foil, tape, tea candle, cardboard, tissue paper (glue stick) or dry cleaner bag (clear tape)
(provided) copper coil "motor"
Day 1 Terms: pressure, volume, temperature, Charle's Law from reading HERE Using a PhET simulation you will pump gas molecules into a box and see what happens as you change the volume, add or remove heat, and more. Measure the temperature and pressure, discover how the properties of the gas vary in relation to each other and what it takes to get the hot air balloon to rise. In your JOURNAL record the following observations: * 1) The relationship between Pressure and Volume * 2) The relationship between Pressure and Temperature * 3) The relationship between Temperature and Volume * 4) What did it take to get the hot air baloon to rise? * RESEARCH & PLAN the making of a hot air balloon using tissue paper and glue stick (BONUS) or an ultra light plastic bag (dry cleaner?) and tape. The final heat source will be a small candle in a foil holder suspended in a minimal framework (straws?). * NEXT TIME Don't forget your hot air balloon materials |
* Must make a lightweight and flame safe firebox! * Inflate with hair dryer to test inside * Test outside with thread/fishline leash * Sketch your craft design in your JOURNAL * Demonstrate to instructor and have JOURNAL signed off * NEXT TIME Don't forget your foil, candle, etc! |
Day 4/5 Make your boat out of cardboard and tape gently wrapped in aluminum foil or plastic * Show instructor and have JOURNAL signed again * Answer advanced JOURNAL questions and turn in for grade |
Day 2/3 Alternate Activities/Bonus Options:
