Satellite Image Analysis

Materials :
Cell phone camera
(provided) Computer, satellite image, PAINT program, Blitz IDE

Day 1

Objectives:
TLW create and modify a computer program that will analyze an image
TLW determine % of campus covered with grass, trees, buildings, asphalt, etc
TLW determine square feet per image pixel

The image of our school campus to the right was procured from Google Maps. It has been reduced to 600 x 600 pixels (360,000 pixels) to speed up the process.

  1. Complete this programming activity
  2. Pick, process and record in your journal color sets and percentages for buildings, asphalt, sidewalks and trees
  3. Use available landmarks to determine pixel per square foot

Day 2

Objective:
TLW analyze the fauna makeup of their own neighborhood

Use Google Maps and zoom in on your own neighborhood. Use the PrintScrn button and then Copy into PAINT and center/crop/stretch-resize the image to 600 x 600 pixels and save to your folder.
  1. Redo the programming activity
  2. Pick, process and record in your journal color sets and percentages for buildings, asphalt, sidewalks and trees
  3. Use available landmarks to determine pixel per square foot

Question:
Do you notice any possible issues with the image analysis?

Day 3

Objective:
TLW use their cell phone camera and analyze a picture for a characteristic of their own choosing.

Hopefully you or your partner brought their cell phone (with camera) and can take a picture and send it to an accessible email account. Using what you have learned, think of an interesting image to take e.g. % freckles, % pepperoni, blonds vs.brunettes, % red cars in lot, % clouds, % color in poster/banner...?

Add this info to your Journal.

You may need to modify the program to adjust for different image sizes
i.e For Loop 0-300, Rect progress bars...

If you don't have a camera then do a Google image search as an alternative .

Day 4

Objective:
TLW finish their Journal , answer higher level questions, and submit for a grade

How could you program an image analyzer to detect cancerous moles?
