Make a Shooter Game!

Materials : Games Factory software

Day 1

Objective:
TLW use The Games Factory to create a "Shooting Game"

Terms:
Storyboard/Level/Events Editor, active object, accelerate

Today you will come up with an original shooting game concept, create your player character, and the projectile. Don't assume by "shooter" that it has to be a typical "shoot the zombies" game. For example:

  • "Shoot" carrots at bunnies to make them lay easter eggs to collect
  • Launch bottles at crying babies to make them quiet
  • Shoot donuts at monsters to make them bigger and finally explode

Once you have planned your original shooter idea,
in the level editor make your character and projectile with CREATE NEW OBJECT and choose ACTIVE OBJECT

Click mouse to place in level and double-click to open image editor. Clear the placeholder icon and draw your own or import a borrowed graphic. Repeat for character, projectile, enemy/target.

Select the player character and choose the Movement Tab from the properties window and pick your favorite movement mechanic , e.g. 8 direction, mouse, racecar, platform, spaceship. For the target you will likely choose bouncing ball, path, invaders or pinball.
Once you have chosen a movement, several other options will appear that you can adjust.

The Event Editor is where most of the program magic will happen, e.g. if the enemy attempts to leave the play area it will bounce back OR when you press the space key your character will launch the projectile OR when the projectile collides with the enemy target both target and projectile are destroyed.

The teacher will explain all the juicy details, i.e. how to make the character move, shoot, make sounds....
