Soda straw precision scale

Materials:
straws, scissors, 1/4" paper punch, zip lock, sauce cup, string, tape
(Provided) straight pin, paper clip, graph paper

Day 1

Objective:
TLW experience a variety of straw construction techniques
TLW observe frequency vs. tube length

After seeing demonstrations of straw construction techniques (i.e. reed, slip joint, paper punch, corner connector) you will make an oboe, spinner, and robot finger

* JOURNAL it!

Day 2

Using the joint bending technology from the previous lesson, TLW create a full robotic hand or marionette or ??

* JOURNAL it

Day 3

Objective:
TLW build and operate a precision microscale

Using ... create a single pan (cup) soda straw balance microscale. A small object is placed in the cup and the straw beam can be adjusted horizontally (along with the paper clip counter balance. Once balanced (pointy straw down), the object is removed and the pan is carefully filled with known masses (constructed next time!).

* Make sure the pivot pin is in the vertical pointer straw just above the horizontal beam straw. Make it as friction free as possible!

Day 4/5

Objective:
TLW create a metric weight set and calibrate their microscale against a known and unknown

* Create a weight set and measure unknowns provided by instructor
   Demonstrate scale to instructor for grade (70/100 pts)
* Record in JOURNAL
* Turn in JOURNAL for grade with advanced question answered for remainder of points
