PhET Space Research Continued

Materials :Your journal and a computer running the 3 PhET simulations (provided)

Day 1-3

Objective:
TLW complete their space studies experience by investigating 3 additional sims and answering all questions given. Each of the 3 journal entries should be at least half a page.

Day 1:
Gravity & Orbits SIM [alt link]
  1. Describe the relationship between the Sun, Earth, Moon and space station, including orbits and positions
  2. Describe the size and distance between the Sun, Earth, Moon and space station
  3. Explain how gravity controls the motion of our solar system
  4. Identify the variables that affect the strength of gravity
  5. Predict how motion would change if gravity was stronger or weaker

Day 2:
My Solar System SIM [alt link]

  1. Predict the necessary mass, velocity, and distance from the sun of a planet in order for this planet to make a circular orbit around a sun.
  2. What happens when you increase or decrease the mass of the planet, but keep everything else constant? Does this agree with your prediction?
  3. What happens to the orbit of the planet when you increase or decrease the magnitude of the velocity of the planet, but keep everything else constant?
  4. What happens to the planet's orbit when the increase or decrease the initial distance between the planet and the sun?

Day 3:
Lunar Lander [alt link]

  1. Explore how the lunar lander behaves on the moon.
  2. Can you measure the value of the moon's gravitational pull?
  3. Explore the relation between the force vectors on the lunar lander and the amount of thrust you apply to it.
  4. Challenge: how many times can you successfully land the lunar lander in different locations before running out of fuel?
