CD Spectroscope

Materials:
Cell phone with digital camera, small flash light, CD, tape, multiple color leaf samples
(provided) dark construction paper, computer with PAINT program

Day 1 - Research / Construction

Objective:
TLW build and operate a spectroscope
TLW experience how to analyze a spectrum for information

Terms:
diffraction, spectrum, spectroscope
A SPECTROSCOPE uses diffraction or refraction to separate light sources into their constituent spectrum. Different wavelengths (colors) bend at different angles. Used in chemical analysis, detecting star types, atmospheric contaminants, etc. spectroscopy has a wide range of application.

* Research and create your handmade spectroscope

Day 2 - Data Collection
Use your cell phone's digital camera to collect spectrums of the following
* Sunlight
* Fluorescent light
* 2 different colored vegetation samples illuminated by flashlight
Day 3 - Image Analysis
* Enlarge the images equally and devise a measurement scale to determine the precise wavelengths of the dominant color bands in the fluorescent and leaf spectrums
* Record your findings in your notebook
* Explain your results based on chlorophyll absorption
* Prepare a class presentation
Day 4 - Report
* Finish presentations
* Share presentation/results with class
* Review the next investigation!
